Acura TL Type-S: SH-AWD VTEC Beast

The 2007-2008 TL Type-S makes 286 horsepower from Honda's 3.5L J35A8 V6 with VTEC. More importantly, it's the only TL with Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system — a torque-vectoring setup that can send up to 70% of power to the rear and 100% side-to-side between rear wheels.

The Type-S runs 5x120 bolt pattern with 18x8 +55 wheels from the factory. For aftermarket fitment, 18x8.5 wheels in 5x120 with +35 to +45 offset work perfectly. Pair them with 245/40R18 tires for the ideal setup.

Subaru Legacy GT: Turbo Boxer Sleeper

The 2005-2009 Legacy GT packs the same EJ255 turbo boxer as the STI, making 250 horsepower and 250 lb-ft in a longer, more refined chassis. The wagon variant (Legacy GT wagon) adds practicality without sacrificing performance.

Factory wheels are 17x7 +55 in 5x100 bolt pattern. For upgrades, 17x8 wheels in 5x100 with +35 to +45 offset fill the wells perfectly. Go with 225/45R17 tires for daily driving or 235/45R17 for more grip.

Mazdaspeed6: AWD Turbo Rocket

The 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6 is the rarest of these three, with only 9,629 units built for the US market. The 2.3L MZR turbo makes 274 horsepower and 280 lb-ft, sent through Mazda's AWD system that can split torque 50/50 front to rear.

The MS6 uses 5x114.3 bolt pattern with 18x7.5 +52.5 factory wheels. For aftermarket setups, 18x8.5 wheels in 5x114.3 with +35 to +45 offset work well. Match them with 235/40R18 tires for the best balance of performance and comfort.

What sets the MS6 apart is the platform — it's based on the Ford CD3 architecture, shared with the first-gen Fusion and Milan. This means it handles more like a European sedan than a typical Japanese car. The turbo engine responds well to basic modifications, with 300+ horsepower achievable with just a tune and intake.

These sedans fly under the radar because they look like rental cars to most people. Cops ignore you, insurance rates stay reasonable, and you can park anywhere without attracting attention. Meanwhile, you're packing more power than most "sports cars" from the same era.

TL Type-S specific issues: Check the SH-AWD rear differential for whining — rebuilds cost $2,000+. The J-series engine is bulletproof, but timing belt service is due every 105,000 miles at $800-1,200. Look for maintenance records.

Legacy GT concerns: The EJ255 engine can suffer from ringland failure, especially in modified cars. Look for oil consumption issues and listen for knock. The 5-speed manual is strong, but the 5EAT automatic has valve body problems around 100,000 miles.

Mazdaspeed6 red flags: The turbo engine needs premium fuel and regular oil changes. The AWD system shares components with the CX-7, which had transfer case issues. Check for smooth engagement and no grinding noises during tight turns.
