Your stock LS1 intake is fine

The LS1's composite manifold was engineered around a cathedral-port head and a factory cam. On a stock or lightly modded car it is nowhere near the restriction. Owners running long-tube headers, a cam, and a tune regularly clear 400+ rwhp on the untouched factory manifold. The people who "felt a huge difference" from a manifold alone almost always changed a tune at the same time.

The LS6 intake swap is the move

If you own a 1997-2000 C5, the single best-value intake decision you can make is the factory LS6 manifold that came on 2001-2004 cars. Same cathedral-port layout, better runner design, and it shows up used for roughly $150-$400 depending on how patient you are.

Documented forum dyno results are consistent and unglamorous, which is exactly why you should trust them:

  • Mostly stock LS1, lid removed, cat-back, no tune: about 10-15 rwhp, all of it living between 4,500 and 6,000 rpm.
  • A logged before/after on a modded car: 349 rwhp / 333 lb-ft to 363 rwhp / 336 lb-ft. That's +14 rwhp and basically no torque change.

Low end stays where it was. This is a top-end mod. And if you're on a 2001-2004 car, congratulations — you already own it, and every dollar you were about to spend here belongs somewhere else in the build.

Big manifolds need big friends

A FAST 102mm or a Hi-Ram on a stock-cam LS1 is a very expensive shelf ornament. Forum dynos from 2026 threads back this up: guys running a big cam, long tubes, and full exhaust still only found 5-10 rwhp moving from the factory manifold to a large-plenum aftermarket unit. On a stock-cam car, expect less than that — and expect to feel none of it.

The manifolds that genuinely pay are the ported ones on cars already flowing serious air. One well-documented build went from 325 rwhp (LS6 intake, long tubes, X-pipe, tune) up to 410 rwhp / 382 lb-ft — but that came with a ported LS6 manifold plus an LS2 throttle body plus a stack of supporting mods. The manifold was a slice of that number, not the reason for it.

Add the install reality: fuel rail off, vacuum lines fought, throttle body mismatch discovered on a Saturday afternoon, water pump housing and idler pulley clearance surprises on some swaps. This is the classic one-hour bolt-on that ends with the garage floor looking like a crime scene. Where the money actually goes

Headers and a tune. Every time, before the manifold. That's the real bottleneck on a stock LS1, and it's not close. A full exhaust plus intake plus tune package on a C5 has been shown to land around +40 rwhp over stock — the manifold contributing maybe a third of that.

Ram-air setups are the interesting outlier. The Vararam VR-B2 shows modest static dyno numbers (2-15 rwhp, usually 5-10 above 5,000 rpm), but owners measure +0.25 to +0.34 psi of manifold pressure at speed and report real trap speed improvements. The mod that shows up in every photo

Here's the honest part. Nobody at a meet can see your manifold. The C5 runs a 5x120.65 (5x4.75") bolt pattern with factory offsets in the +50s, and base cars left the factory staggered at 17x8.5 with 245/45ZR17 up front and 18x9.5 with 275/40ZR18 out back.

Stock or mild bolt-ons: LS6 manifold plus a tune, done. Skip the big-plenum stuff until you have the cam, heads, and headers to feed it — the manifold conversation doesn't really start until you're chasing 450+. Mid-level build with headers, exhaust, cam, and tune already sorted? Then a ported LS6 or a large-plenum aftermarket unit finally earns its keep, and the ram-air setups start paying at trap speed.

Stop paying for the wrong part of the combination.
