G35 Sedan Coilovers: Best V36 Kits for RWD and G35x

For a RWD 2007-2008 G35 sedan, our pick is the Fortune Auto 500 Series (Separate Style Rear). It has a 24-step monotube damper and a 5-year warranty. For the best bang for the buck, run the BC Racing BR Series with 30 clicks of damping, in RA (pillowball) or RS (rubber top mount) form. On the G35x AWD sedan, get the Fortune Auto 500 Series for the G35X. The D2 Racing RS with 36-way monotube dampers is the value play. If you just want a G35x low without spending big, the TruHart StreetPlus drops it roughly 1.5 to 4.0 inches.

Which V36 G35 sedan do you have?

This matters more than brand. RWD and AWD V36 sedans take completely different coilover kits, and nothing in this post swaps between them. The good news is that sorting it out takes about ten seconds.

The V36 is the 2007-2008 G35 sedan. It runs the 306 hp VQ35HR with 268 lb-ft and a 7,600 rpm redline. The 2007 G35 Coupe is the older car with the VQ35DE, and it uses different suspension. If that's what's in your driveway, our G35 Coupe build guide is the better read.

Separate rear vs true rear: what does that mean on a V36?

From the factory, the V36 rear splits the shock and spring into two separate parts. The shock sits in line with the wheel center to cut friction and axle wind-up under throttle. That's why several kits here come in two versions:

  • Separate Style Rear keeps that factory layout. You get a new rear shock and a new rear spring in its own spot, and rear height is set at the spring perch.
  • True Style Rear puts the spring around the rear damper, so the rear works like a full coilover just like the front.

For a daily, we'd run separate. It keeps the geometry Infiniti designed and is the simpler install. True rear is for owners who want the rear to adjust exactly like the front, usually stance or dedicated track builds.

Best coilovers for the G35x AWD sedan (V36)

2008 Infiniti G35x AWD Sedan in Vibrant Red

The G35x is the heavy one at 3,704 lbs, noticeably more than the 3,497 lb RWD base car. It's also the least balanced V36. The weight split runs between 53/47 and 54/46, and the x sits at the nose-heavy end. Infiniti even changed the factory AWD strut part numbers partway through 2007 production. A coilover kit replaces the whole thing, so you can ignore that detail.

Owners upgrade for three reasons: the 4x4-looking wheel gap, nose dive under braking, and body roll that shows up quickly with that extra weight up front. Here's every G35x coilover kit we carry.

The BC Racing BR Series V-08-BR-RS is the AWD-specific BR kit. It gives you 30 clicks of damping, threaded ride height and separate spring preload, and spring rates can be matched to your build. RS means a rubber top mount up front, which keeps cabin noise closer to stock. It also fits the 2009-2013 G37x and 2014-2015 Q60, so you'll find plenty of these on the road. It's a solid daily pick for G35x owners who want real adjustability.

The D2 Racing RS Series D-IN-10 is the click-count king here. D2 Racing claims 36-way adjustable monotube dampers, and full ride height adjustment with separate preload that keeps full strut stroke. All four corners get aluminum top mounts with rubber bushings. The mounts are anodized and powder coated, with anti-rust coating on the strut threads, and D2 says the kit is serviceable in the USA. If you want monotube hardware at a mid-pack spend, this is the one.

The Fortune Auto 500 Series G35X (Separate Style Rear) is our top G35x kit. Fortune Auto builds it around a 24-step monotube damper with high-pressure nitrogen, a digressive piston and T6 6061 aluminum mounts. Each kit is custom built and dyno tested. It carries a 5-year limited warranty and can be rebuilt and revalved at Fortune's own facility. You can pick Fortune's default springs, Swift or Hyperco, and the kit is upgradeable to 2-way or 3-way canister dampers later.

The Fortune Auto 500 Series G35X (True Style Rear) uses the same damper, warranty and spring choices, but the rear spring rides on the shock. Pick this one if you want matching height adjustment front and rear, or if you're building the x for stance.

The TruHart StreetPlus TH-I803 is the budget lowering kit. TruHart says it drops a G35x from about 1.5 inches to about 4.0 inches. It uses 44mm twin-tube struts with aluminum top mounts at all four corners and adjustable lower mounts for ride height, backed by a 2-year warranty. TruHart doesn't advertise damping adjustment, so treat it as a set-it-and-forget-it kit for owners who mainly want the gap gone.

Our G35x pick: the Fortune Auto 500 Series with the separate rear. On a heavy AWD daily, a good monotube damper and a warranty that long matter more than anything else. On a tighter budget, go D2 RS.

Best coilovers for the RWD G35 sedan (V36)

2008 Infiniti G35 Journey Sedan rear three-quarter view in Black Obsidian

The RWD sedan weighs 3,497 lbs and uses a stiffened four-wheel multi-link setup with a single-pivot double wishbone up front, plenty of aluminum, and sway bars at both ends. Sport trims got extra tuning. Infiniti used different factory struts for Base/Journey, Sport, and cars with rear steering.

The factory setup is decent, but these cars are getting old. Owners upgrade because tired struts float over dips, the gap over staggered 18s looks lazy, and a 306 hp RWD sedan deserves better control. The RWD side has the deepest lineup we carry.

The BC Racing BR Series V-02-BR-RA is the RWD BR kit with a pillowball front top mount. Pillowball means sharper steering feel and a bit more noise in the cabin. You get 30 clicks of damping and threaded height. BC also offers an Extreme Low Kit, custom spring rates and optional Swift springs. It covers the RWD V36 sedan across all trims, which makes it the BC to grab for a Sport.

The BC Racing BR Series V-02-BR-RS is the same BR damper with a rubber front top mount, so it's quieter and more comfortable. Its fitment lists the 2007-2008 G35 Base and Journey. If you have one of those and drive it every day, this is the BC we'd pick.

The Fortune Auto 500 Series V36 Sedan (Separate Style Rear) brings the same 24-step nitrogen monotube, digressive piston, T6 6061 mounts and 5-year limited warranty to the RWD car. It keeps the factory rear layout and comes with Fortune, Swift or Hyperco springs. It's the most complete street kit for the RWD sedan.

The Fortune Auto 500 Series V36 Sedan (True Style Rear) is the same kit with the spring moved onto the rear damper. Choose it if you want the rear to adjust exactly like the front.

The Fortune Auto 500 Super Low Series (Separate Style Rear) is the 500 Series built for owners who want more drop than the standard kit gives. It has the same damper family and warranty. Pick this one if tuck is the goal (tuck means tire tucked up into the fender).

The Fortune Auto 500 Super Low Series (True Style Rear) pairs the Super Low setup with a true rear. It's the lowest-intent Fortune kit for the V36, and it's built for show cars and serious stance builds.

The Silvers Neomax SN1017 is the only kit here with published spring rates: 14K front, 8K rear. Silvers uses a 52mm seamless carbon-steel shock tube, cold-bent SAE9254 springs and anodized T6 6061 lower mounts made for multi-link suspension, with a 5-year limited warranty. It keeps the OEM-style separate rear and has single-adjustable (1-way) damping. A Super Low option and Swift spring upgrades are available. 14K up front is firm, so this suits drivers who want a stiff car right out of the box.

Our RWD pick: the Fortune Auto 500 Series, separate rear. For a value build, go BC BR: RS on a Base or Journey, RA on a Sport. If it were our car, we'd run the Fortune 500 with Swift springs, about a two-finger gap, and call it done.

BC Racing vs Fortune Auto (and D2, TruHart, Silvers) on the V36

BC Racing is the default first coilover for a reason. You get 30 clicks, threaded height, separate preload, flexible spring rates and fitment for both drivetrains. The top mount letter matters on these kits: RS is rubber up front, and RA is pillowball up front.

Fortune Auto is the step up. It uses fewer damping steps (24), but every damper is a nitrogen monotube, dyno tested, with a 5-year warranty and rebuilds and revalving in the US. It's also the only brand here with an upgrade path to canister dampers.

D2 Racing sits between them on the AWD car with 36-way monotubes. TruHart is the cheapest way to drop a G35x, but its twin-tube dampers have no advertised adjustment. Silvers is the firm-out-of-the-box option for the RWD car.

If you also own a Z, the same brands show up in our Z33 coilover picks and our 370Z coilover guide.

Coilovers vs lowering springs on a G35 sedan

Springs alone are the cheap route, but you lock in one ride height and you're asking factory struts on a car this old to handle the drop. You can't fix rake, and you can't corner-balance. Every kit above lets you set the height you want and replaces the tired dampers in the same job.

We'd skip springs on a V36. If the budget is tight, the TruHart on a G35x or a BC BR on the RWD car beats springs on worn struts every time. Spring rates confuse a lot of first-timers, so read our coilover spring rate guide before you order custom rates.

How do V36 coilovers ride on the street?

Ride quality comes down to four things: top mount, damper design, spring rate and how low you go.

  • Rubber top mounts (BC RS, D2) soak up noise. Pillowball (BC RA front) is sharper and louder.
  • Monotube (Fortune, D2) generally stays more consistent when hot than twin-tube (TruHart).
  • Spring rate sets the baseline. Silvers' 14K front is the firmest published number here.
  • Height is the big one. Slam any of these and it'll ride badly, because the damper runs out of travel.

Start with the damping set soft, drive it for a week, then add stiffness a few clicks at a time.

How low can a V36 G35 sedan go?

Only TruHart publishes a number: about 1.5 to 4.0 inches of drop on the G35x. The Fortune Super Low kits and BC's Extreme Low Kit exist for owners who want more drop than the standard kits give. In practice, your wheels and tires set the limit before the coilovers do. The Sport's staggered 245/45R18 rears are what touch the fender first.

Exploded isometric line drawing of a coilover showing the damping adjuster, top mount, spring, lock ring, spring perch and threaded damper body.
Figure 1. Every adjustment point in the stack: damping at the top knob, ride height at the threaded perch and lock ring.

Height is set at the damper body (6 in Figure 1), and the lock ring (4) holds it in place. Preload is set separately at the spring perch (5), which squeezes the coil spring (3). Keep preload as it ships and adjust height on the body, so you don't shorten your travel. Damping is the knob on the adjuster (1) up at the top mount (2).

Factory wheels are 5x114.3 with a 66.1mm hub bore, M12x1.25 lugs and 15-35mm offsets. Plan wheels and height together using our G35 wheel fitment guide.

Do you need an alignment after installing coilovers?

Yes, every time. Dropping the car changes camber and toe, and toe is what eats tires. Set your final height, drive a few days so the springs settle, recheck the height, then get it aligned. If you change the height again later, align again.

Adaptive dampers and Four-Wheel Active Steer

On a V36 sedan, the question to ask is really about Four-Wheel Active Steer. It was offered on RWD Sport and Sport 6MT cars, and as a stand-alone option on the Sport automatic. It changes rear geometry based on speed and steering input, and Infiniti listed separate factory struts for cars with rear steering.

If your car has 4WAS, choose your exact trim and options on the product page before you order. The BC RS lists Base and Journey only, so Sport owners should look at the BC RA, Fortune or Silvers kits. The G35x didn't offer 4WAS.

How long does a V36 coilover install take?

It's an afternoon on a lift and a full day in the driveway. The front double-wishbone corners are a straight swap. With a separate-style rear you swap the shock and the spring as two jobs. A true rear replaces both with one assembly. Then go straight to alignment. If you're new to this and don't have spring compressors and a torque wrench, have a shop do it.

Maintenance and rebuilds

Wash the threads after winter, check the lock rings (4 in Figure 1) every oil change, and listen for top mount clunks. Fortune Auto rebuilds and revalves its 500 Series in-house. D2 says its kits are serviceable in the USA. Silvers and Fortune back their kits for 5 years, and TruHart for 2. If you plan to keep the car for a long time, rebuild support is worth paying for.

FAQ

What are the best coilovers for a 2007-2008 G35 sedan?

For the RWD sedan, we'd pick the Fortune Auto 500 Series with a separate rear. It has a 24-step nitrogen monotube, a 5-year warranty and in-house rebuilds. For the G35x, get the Fortune 500 G35X kit. The value pick is the BC Racing BR Series on either drivetrain, or the D2 RS on AWD. Buy for your drivetrain first and brand second.

Do G35x coilovers fit the RWD G35 sedan?

No. The AWD and RWD V36 sedans use different kits and part numbers. The D2 RS and TruHart StreetPlus are listed for AWD only, and the BC V-08-BR-RS is the G35x version. RWD owners need the V-02 BC kits, the V36 sedan Fortune kits or the Silvers SN1017.

Separate rear or true rear on a V36?

The factory V36 rear keeps the spring and shock apart. Separate style keeps that layout, and true style puts the spring on the damper. For a daily, we'd go separate because it's simpler and stays true to the factory design. Go true rear if you want the rear to adjust like the front for stance or track work.

Are BC Racing coilovers good on a G35 sedan?

Yes. BC BR is the most common first kit on these cars. You get 30 clicks, threaded height, separate preload and spring rates matched to your build. Choose RS (rubber front mount) for a quieter daily, or RA (pillowball front) for sharper feel. On a RWD Sport, go RA, because the RS lists Base and Journey only.

BC Racing or Fortune Auto for the V36?

BC gives you more clicks (30 vs 24) for less money. Fortune gives you nitrogen monotube dampers that are dyno tested, a 5-year warranty, in-house rebuilds and a path to canister upgrades. If you're keeping the car for years and want it to ride well the whole time, go Fortune. If you want a good first coilover now, go BC.

How low can a G35 sedan go on coilovers?

TruHart says its StreetPlus drops a G35x about 1.5 to 4.0 inches. Fortune's Super Low kits, Silvers' Super Low option and BC's Extreme Low Kit are for going lower than standard kits allow. Your tires usually decide the limit, especially the staggered 245/45R18 rears on the Sport. Go too low and ride quality drops off fast.

Do I need an alignment after installing coilovers?

Always. Lowering changes camber and toe, and a bad toe setting will wear tires out quickly. Set your height, let the springs settle for a few days, then align. Any height change after that means another alignment.

Will coilovers work on a G35 Sport with Four-Wheel Active Steer?

4WAS was available on RWD Sport and Sport 6MT cars, and Infiniti used specific factory struts for rear-steer cars. Choose your exact trim and options on the product page before you order. Skip the BC RS on a Sport, since it lists Base and Journey. The BC RA, Fortune and Silvers kits are the ones to look at.

Can V36 coilovers be rebuilt?

The Fortune Auto 500 Series can be rebuilt and revalved at Fortune's own facility, and D2 says its kits are serviceable in the USA. Warranty terms are 5 years for Fortune and Silvers and 2 years for TruHart. If you drive the car hard or keep it for a long time, choose a kit with rebuild support.
