Mass Air Flow Meter
Mass Air Flow Meter: the sensor your fuel map reads before anything else
A mass air flow meter measures how much air is actually entering the engine so the ECU can trim fuel to match. Get that reading wrong and everything downstream suffers: lean spots, rich stumbles, a rough idle, and a check engine light that won't clear. People fit a different meter for two reasons. Either the original sensor is dead or drifting and needs replacing, or they've gone bigger on the intake side and the stock meter can no longer flow enough air or read it correctly at the new pipe diameter. That's where a larger-body meter, or a flange to mount a factory sensor into custom piping, comes in.
What ThreePiece stocks in this category
There are 10 products here, and they split into two jobs. Some are complete calibrated meters. The rest are flanges and mounts that let you locate a factory Denso, Hitachi or blade-style sensor in your own intake tubing. The range runs from $42 to $319, the current spread for what's in stock, not a fixed price. Four brands are represented: BBK, Torque Solution, Radium Engineering and Spectre.
On the complete-meter end, BBK builds calibrated 76mm units for the 1986-1993 Ford Mustang 5.0, matched to injector size - the 76mm 19 lb injector calibration and the 76mm 24 lb injector calibration. On the flange side, Torque Solution offers a stainless Denso MAF flange for 02-07 Subaru WRX/STI 3in piping and a Hitachi MAF flange for 3in pipe. Radium Engineering makes a weld-on aluminum Denso sensor flange for Lotus, and Spectre has a GM LS3/LS7 blade-style sensor mount.
How to choose
Decide first whether you need the sensor or just the mount. If your meter is failing, or you're a Fox-body Mustang running bigger injectors, you want a complete calibrated unit - and the calibration must match your injector size, which is why BBK sells the same 76mm body in 19 lb and 24 lb versions. If you're building custom intake piping and reusing a healthy factory Denso or Hitachi sensor, buy the flange instead and save the sensor cost. Match the flange to your sensor type and your pipe diameter - the Torque Solution units are cut for 3in piping. Confirmed fitment data covers Ford and Subaru across a 1986-2007 year span; the rest are sensor- or pipe-specific rather than vehicle-specific.
What else you need with it
A meter or flange is one piece of the intake. Most buyers here are also working with a cold air intake or a full cold air intake kit, and the sensor reads cleaner behind a fresh filter - see replacement air filters and drop in filters. Forced-induction builds routing a flange into custom tubing will also be shopping intercooler pipes. Browse everything under Air Intakes.
