Valve Guides: the wear part that keeps your valves square to the seat

A valve guide is the sleeve pressed into the cylinder head that the valve stem slides through. Its job is to hold each valve dead-centered on its seat as it opens and closes, feed a little oil down the stem for lubrication, and carry heat out of the valve into the head. When guides wear, you get stem-to-guide clearance that lets the valve wander, which burns seats, leaks oil past the stem, and costs you compression. Fresh valve guides are standard practice during a head rebuild, a rebuild for higher stem loads, or when you switch to a different valve material and need matched clearance.

Two things decide the guide: the engine it fits and the stem it's cut for. Guides are dimensioned to a specific stem diameter and outer diameter, so match them to your valves and head. The Brian Crower RB26DETT 6.0mm intake set of 12 and the 6.6mm 6G72 intake set of 12 call out stem size right in the name for exactly that reason. Manganese bronze is a common material here - the Supertech S54 set with 6mm stem and 12.03mm OD lists both figures, as does the M42/M50/S50/S52 set with 6mm stem and 12.56mm OD. Count your valves so you buy enough guides for the full head, and confirm intake versus exhaust where the sets are split.
