A snorkel relocates your engine's air pickup from the fender or inner guard up to roof-line height. That does two jobs. It moves the intake mouth above dust, sand and standing water, so you draw cleaner, cooler air instead of the hot, grit-laden air down in the engine bay. And on water crossings it lifts the point where water could get sucked into the intake tract, which is where hydrolock starts.
