Valve Retainers
Valve Retainers: the small part that decides how high your valvetrain will rev
A valve retainer is the top cap that locks the valve spring to the valve stem. It seats against the spring, captures the split keepers (locks) in its taper, and holds the whole spring under preload so the valve returns closed every cycle. That is the real job of valve retainers: keep the spring controlled at high RPM. When you fit stiffer springs for more lift or a higher redline, the stock retainer can be the weak link, and a lighter or stronger retainer reduces reciprocating mass at the top of the spring so the valve follows the cam instead of floating.
What ThreePiece stocks
There are 18 valve retainers in this category right now, spread across 6 brands: Brian Crower, Skunk2 Racing, COMP Cams, BLOX Racing, GSC Power Division and Supertech. Prices currently run from $31 to $249 - that is the live range for what is in stock, not a fixed price. Most of the range is titanium, with steel sets available too, such as the Supertech BMW N54 3.0L steel retainer set of 12.
Model names on these parts cover Honda, Acura, Nissan, Subaru, Ford, BMW, Toyota and Lexus. Note that none of the products in this category carry structured fitment data, so confirm the application against your engine code before you order. For example, the Skunk2 Pro Series titanium retainers for B16A/B18C/H22A/F20B and the Skunk2 K20/K24/F20C/F22C set are called out by engine family, as are the BLOX Racing Ti retainers for B16A/B18C and the BLOX B18A-B/B20 set.
How to choose
The main trade-off in this category is titanium versus steel. Titanium retainers are the lightest option and dominate the range here - good for chasing valve control at high RPM. Steel retainers, like the Supertech N54 set, tend to cost less and are a common pick when you want durability over the last few grams. Match the retainer to the spring and keeper system you are running: several of these sets are sold to pair with a specific spring kit, so check the description. If you want a street-biased option, the Brian Crower titanium retainers for B/H/K/F series are listed as a limited street/race part.
What else you need with it
Retainers rarely go in alone. If you are opening the head, browse Head Gaskets and full Gasket Kits for the reassembly. A valvetrain refresh often pairs with new Pistons and fresh Bearings during a rebuild. See everything in the parent Engine Components section, including Oil Filters for the first fire-up.
