Ring Compressors for Engine Builds
A ring compressor squeezes the piston rings into their grooves so the piston can slide into the cylinder bore. Without one, a ring can catch on the edge of the bore, which risks breaking the ring or scratching the cylinder wall. Engine builders use them during assembly to get each piston in cleanly and evenly. This helps protect the ring seal that controls compression and oil consumption.
We currently have 7 ring compressors in stock, all from ARP. Options include the ARP 84.0mm Ring Compressor and the ARP 86.0mm Ring Compressor. Each is sized for a specific bore.
When choosing a ring compressor, keep these points in mind:
Match the compressor to your finished bore size. If the block has been machined, the original factory size may no longer apply.
Measure the bore after any honing or boring work and before you order.
If you build more than one engine, you may need a separate compressor for each bore size.
Keep the compressor clean and lightly oiled so the piston slides in smoothly.
To narrow the list, pick your vehicle to see what fits.
