Derby Covers

Derby Covers: the round cover that finishes off your primary drive

A derby cover is the round outer cover that bolts over the clutch and primary derby opening on a V-twin. Its job is straightforward but real: it seals that opening against dirt and grease and gives you a service port to check clutch adjustment and top off primary fluid without pulling the full primary cover. Most riders swap the stock derby cover for one that matches the finish on the rest of the bike, or to run a bezel-style piece with a machined face. Fitting one is a few bolts and a fresh gasket - but the bolt pattern and year matter, so read the fitment before you order.

What we stock

We currently have 6 derby covers in stock across 2 brands: Bikers Choice (five of the six) and Performance Machine (one). Prices run from $70 to $378, which is the current range for what is on the shelf, not a fixed promise. At the value end, the Bikers Choice 99-Up Big Twin 5 Bolt Chrome Derby Cover and the Bikers Choice 04-Up Black Derby Cover cover plain replacement and finish swaps. At the top is the Performance Machine Vision Derby Cover (Bezel) in Contrast Cut, a machined bezel-style piece.

Fitment

Four of the six list fitment data, all for Harley-Davidson - specifically Big Twin, Sportster and XL models across a 1970 to 2024 year span. Bolt count and year cutoffs are the deciding factors here, so match your model year to the listing exactly. If you are unsure whether a 5-bolt or later pattern fits your engine, call the number below before ordering.

How to choose

  • Finish first. Chrome and black replacements from Bikers Choice are the straightforward path if you just want a clean, matching cover.
  • Style vs. price. The Performance Machine Vision bezel is the show piece and sits at the top of the range at $378; the Bikers Choice covers sit near $85-$93. Decide whether you want a machined statement or a solid, plain replacement.
  • Match the pattern. A cover that looks right still has to line up with your primary's bolt pattern and year - that is the trade-off that outranks looks.

What else you need with it

Plan on a fresh derby gasket when you pull the old cover, and check the rest of the primary while you are in there. Browse related Gasket Kits and Head Gaskets in the same section. If the primary work grows, our Bearings, Fittings and Oil Filters pages cover the usual companion parts. See everything under Engine Components.

Ordering and fitment help

Every order ships with free shipping, and Affirm and Katapult financing is available if you want to spread the cost. Not sure which cover matches your bike? Call our team at 813-535-5801 or reach us through Contact Us. For wheel and tire sizing on the same build, use the wheel fitment calculator.
