U-Joints: the small cross that keeps your driveline turning

A u-joint is the cross-and-cap coupling that lets a driveshaft or axle transmit torque through an angle. As the shaft rotates and the suspension moves, the four needle-bearing caps ride on the cross trunnions and allow the two yokes to run at different angles without binding. When a u-joint wears, you get clunk on throttle, vibration at speed, and eventually a failed cross that drops the shaft. Fitting a fresh u-joint restores a tight, quiet driveline, and it is one of the more common wear items on 4x4 and side-by-side axles.

What we stock in this category

This is a focused set of 4 u-joints, with current pricing running from $48 to $105 for what is in stock right now (not a locked-in promise). Three brands are represented: Yukon Gear & Axle with two parts, plus All Balls Racing and EPI. Coverage in the named fitment leans to Polaris and Can-Am across roughly 2000 to 2024, including the Polaris Xplorer 250 4x4, Polaris Sportsman, Polaris RZR XP and RZR Turbo, and the Can-Am X3.

How to choose

Two very different jobs live here, so match the part to what you are doing:

  • Axle service on a UTV or ATV. The All Balls Racing 19-1005 covers the front axle inner joint on the 00-02 Polaris Xplorer 250 4x4, and the EPI WE100996 fits a wider spread of Polaris and Can-Am machines. Both sit at $47.99. Check the exact axle position and reference number before ordering.
  • Driveline conversion or rebuild. The Yukon 1350 to 1410 conversion joint (YUJ1435) at $104.61 lets you mate a 1350-series yoke to a 1410-series yoke, while the YUJ178 1350 joint with Zerk fitting at $78.61 is a straight-series replacement you can grease in service.

The trade-off is straightforward: pick by series and yoke size for driveline work, or by exact vehicle and axle position for UTV/ATV work. A Zerk fitting lets you re-grease; a sealed joint does not.

What else you need with it

A worn u-joint rarely lives alone. If the shaft feeds a diff, look at Differential Components, Differential Covers and Differential Lockers. For chain- and sprocket-driven machines, see Chain Components and Sprockets. Clutch and shift work is covered in Clutch Components. Browse the full Drivetrain section to line up everything in one order.
