Cables
Cables: the small link between your grip and your engine
Control cables carry your hand and foot inputs to the parts that actually do the work - the throttle bodies, the idle circuit, the clutch. A stretched, frayed or binding cable turns a crisp throttle into a vague one and makes a clutch pull heavy or notchy. When you route a new cable, you set its free play, run it clear of steering lock and hot components, and lube the inner wire so it slides. A worn cable is cheap to replace and dangerous to ignore, which is why most riders swap them during bar changes, a rebuild, or routine service.
What ThreePiece stocks
This category has 40 cables in stock, spanning throttle, idle and assembly-style cables. The current price range runs from $33 to $275 - that reflects what is on the shelf right now, not a locked-in offer. Four brands are represented: Bikers Choice makes up the bulk with 36 listings, alongside S&S Cycle, ProTaper and All Balls Racing. Coverage leans heavily toward Harley-Davidson, with 35 of the 40 products carrying fitment data across models including the XL, Softail, Dyna, Touring, FXR, FLHR and FLHT families, plus Polaris on the ATV side. Listed years run from 1981 to 2023.
How to choose
Start with the job. For a Sportster throttle swap, the Bikers Choice 88-95 XL Armor Coat throttle cable is a stock-length replacement, and the matching 81-86 FL FX XL idle cable covers the return side. If you have raised or wider bars, look at longer options - the S&S Cycle 36in 2-cable throttle assembly and the S&S Cycle 36in threaded open-side throttle cable add length for the reroute. Off-road and ATV riders have the ProTaper KTM/Husqvarna Twister assembly and the budget-friendly All Balls Racing Polaris Hawkeye throttle cable at the low end of the range. The main trade-off is length versus fit: buy a cable cut for your bar height, because too short binds at full lock and too long loops and snags.
What else you need
Cables rarely go in alone. If you are inside the primary, pair the work with Clutch Components, Clutch Levers or a full Clutch Rebuild Kit. Riders doing broader drivetrain service also browse Sprockets, Chain Components and Shift Components. See everything in the Drivetrain section.
