Drag Radial Fitment Basics: Sizes, Diameter & Clearance
A drag radial is a street-legal (DOT-marked) drag tire built to hook in a straight line, and the single rule that decides whether one fits your car is overall diameter plus clearance: calculate the tire's real height, then confirm it clears the fender, frame and exhaust at full suspension travel. The name on the sidewall tells you almost nothing about height on its own — a 325/50R15 measures 27.8 in tall while a narrower 275/60R15 measures 28.0 in. Get diameter right and gearing, speedometer accuracy and tuck all fall into place. Get it wrong and you'll be rubbing sheet metal on the first hard launch.

What a drag radial is
A drag radial is a DOT-legal radial with a soft compound and tall, flexible sidewalls that wrinkle at launch to cushion the hit and keep the contact patch planted. That wrinkle is the whole point: instead of shocking the tire and breaking traction, the sidewall absorbs the load and lets the tread bite. The tradeoff is focus — these are built for straight-line traction, not cornering or wet use, which is why they live alongside rather than replace grippier-in-corners high-performance tires in the broader tire lineup.
Reading drag radial sizes
Work out the height before you shop. The math is:
overall diameter (in) = rim + 2 × (section_width_mm × aspect/100) / 25.4
The middle number is the aspect ratio — sidewall height as a percentage of section width — so it, not the width, controls how tall the tire stands.
Worked examples
- 255/60R15 — 27.0 in overall diameter, 10.0 in section width, 6.0 in of sidewall
- 275/60R15 — 28.0 in overall diameter, 10.8 in section width, 6.5 in of sidewall
- 325/50R15 — 27.8 in overall diameter, 12.8 in section width, 6.4 in of sidewall
- 275/40R17 — 25.7 in overall diameter, 10.8 in section width, 4.3 in of sidewall
- 305/45R17 — 27.8 in overall diameter, 12.0 in section width, 5.4 in of sidewall
- 315/50R17 — 29.4 in overall diameter, 12.4 in section width, 6.2 in of sidewall
Notice how 275/60R15 and 275/40R17 share the same 10.8 in section width but differ by 2.3 in in height, and how 305/45R17 lands at exactly the same 27.8 in as 325/50R15 with 1.0 in less sidewall. On a 15-inch wheel you buy sidewall cheaply; on 17s you need a taller aspect ratio to get it back.
Diameter, gearing and your speedometer
Height changes your effective final drive. Moving from 255/60R15 at 27.0 in to 275/60R15 at 28.0 in scales engine rpm at a given road speed by the diameter ratio 27.0/28.0 = 0.964 — about 3.6% lower rpm on the taller tire, which also raises effective gearing. That can be a win for trap-speed cars with gear left over, or a bog for a combination already geared tall. It also means the speedometer and odometer read low by roughly the same percentage until they're recalibrated.
Clearance and wheel checks
- Match the front-to-rear diameter change so the speedometer stays honest — use the computed diameters, not the tire's advertised name.
- Check clearance at full compression, not ride height. Inner fender, frame, spring perch and exhaust all move closer when the suspension collapses on a launch or a driveway dip.
- Remember that wheels change tire width. As an approximate industry rule of thumb, measured section width grows roughly 0.2 in for every 0.5 in of extra rim width — so recheck clearance any time you change wheels.
- Verify the tire's approved rim-width range covers your wheel before you buy.

Are drag radials street legal?
They carry a DOT marking, so they're generally street legal, but treat them as a limited-duty tire: the soft compound wants heat, and cold-weather and wet-road capability is reduced compared with a conventional street tire. Check your local rules and keep expectations modest in rain. Many owners keep a set of summer performance tires for daily driving.
Does a bigger number in the size mean a taller tire?
No. The first number is width. A 325/50R15 is 12.8 in wide but only 27.8 in tall, while the much narrower 275/60R15 stands 28.0 in tall thanks to its 60-series aspect ratio. Always run the diameter formula.
Will drag radials throw off my speedometer?
Any change in rolling diameter shifts it proportionally — a taller tire makes the indicated speed read lower than your actual speed. Compare computed diameters between your old and new size and recalibrate if the gap matters to you.
Can I daily drive drag radials?
They're designed for straight-line traction, so tread life, wet grip and noise are compromises. If the car sees real street miles, a dedicated drag radial set for track days plus a street set from the wider tire and performance tire range is the more practical setup.
