The 2001–2006 M3 runs 5x120 with a 72.5mm hub bore and M12x1.5 lug bolts — not studs. Factory Style 67s came 18x8 +47 front and 18x9 +26 rear on 225/45 and 255/40. The CSL bumped to 19x8.5 +47 and 19x9.5 +27, which is the fitment half the internet still copies fifteen years later.
The important number is that rear +26. BMW gave the rear a genuinely aggressive offset and then hobbled the front with +47, which is why stock M3s look like they're crouching backward. Why everyone copies the factory stagger
BMW shipped it staggered, so most owners never question it. Then they spend the next five years buying rear tires at double the rate of the fronts and calling it the cost of ownership.
On a 333hp, ~3,400 lb naturally aspirated car with a limited-slip diff, the stagger isn't doing anything a square setup can't. It's not a 500hp traction problem. The square setup: 18x9.5 +22 on 265/35
The number is 18x9.5 +22, all four corners, 5x120, 72.5 hubcentric. Run 255/35R18 if you want a hair more protection over the lip, or 265/35R18 if you want the fenders filled and the sidewall doing more work. Front clearance at +22 is the part people worry about, and it's manageable — the E46 front strut has room, the limiting factor is the fender lip at full lock with a lowered ride height. Anything more aggressive than +15 up front on a 9.5 and you're into liner trimming.

17s, 18s, and 19s: what actually clears
17s: Yes, they clear. The E46 M3's 325mm front rotors fit under most 17" wheels with a reasonable barrel profile — this is why the dedicated track crowd runs 17x9 +42 on 255/40R17. Cheaper tires, more sidewall, and the car doesn't lose anything on a road course. Check 17x9 options if that's your use case. Verify spoke clearance before you buy — not every 17 clears every caliper.
18s: The correct street answer. Best tire selection, best ride quality, best price per set.
19s: The CSL look. 19x9.5 +22 square works, but you're paying more for tires that ride worse on American roads. Browse 19" wheels in 5x120 if the silhouette matters more than the compliance. Nothing wrong with that — just be honest about the trade.

The work you're signing up for
Rear fenders get rolled. Not "maybe." The E46 rear lip is a folded pinch weld and it will find your sidewall on the first uneven driveway. Heat gun, patience, go slow — the paint cracks when you rush it.
Then sort your rear camber before you blame the wheel. These sit deep in negative camber from the factory and half the fitment complaints on forums are actually inner-shoulder wear from an alignment nobody has touched since 2011. Adjustable rear control arms and a real alignment change the car more than an extra half inch of width. Start with the suspension section.
And before anything else: check the rear subframe mounting points. Wheels don't matter if the floor they bolt to is opening up. This is the single most important pre-purchase inspection item on the entire platform, and it's the reason clean examples now command what they do.
Lug bolts, hubcentric rings, and the lost weekend
The E46 uses lug bolts, not studs, which means you're holding 40 pounds of wheel with one hand while blind-threading with the other. Buy an alignment pin. It costs almost nothing and it saves your knuckles, your paint, and your Saturday. Grab one from the tools section.
Run 72.5mm hubcentric rings — always. Most aftermarket wheels ship with a 73.1mm or larger bore and the lug bolts alone should not be centering a 20+ lb wheel at highway speed.
