Exhaust Adapters
Exhaust Adapters: the fitting that lets two mismatched pipes talk to each other
An exhaust adapter is the short bridge piece that mates one pipe or component to another when the diameters, flange patterns, or slip joints don't line up on their own. You fit one when a new aftermarket downpipe, cat-back, or muffler doesn't bolt straight to what's already on the car, or when you're joining tubing of different outer diameters. Instead of cutting, re-flanging, or fabricating from scratch, the right exhaust adapter gives you a clean, sealed connection with the correct gaskets and bolt-up in most cases. It's a small part that saves a lot of grief on an install.
What ThreePiece stocks
There are 32 exhaust adapters in stock right now, priced from $40 to $214 - the current range for what's on the shelf, not a fixed promise. That spread runs across 11 brands. Vibrant is the deepest with 11 in the sample, followed by Turbo XS with 8 and Stainless Bros with 4. Torque Solution, Akrapovic, GReddy, Mishimoto, Stainless Works, Vance and Hines, Invidia, and Remus round out the list.
Concrete examples: the Turbo XS Catback adapter for 2002-5 WRX and STi sits at the top of the range, while the Turbo XS 3in downpipe to OEM cat-back adapter ships with exhaust and donut gaskets. The Mishimoto stock-downpipe-to-3in adapter and the welded Vibrant SS slip joint adapter for 3in OD tubing cover more generic joins. There's also the two-wheeler side, like the Vance & Hines Harley Davidson Tri Glide adapter kit.
How to choose
Adapters are all about what you're connecting. Match on three things: pipe diameter, joint type (slip-fit versus flanged), and the specific system on your car. A Subaru downpipe-to-cat-back adapter won't help a Honda, and some are brand-locked - the GReddy Civic Si coupe-to-sedan adapter only works with GReddy exhausts. If you want a plug-and-play join with a gasket in the box, pick a vehicle-specific kit. If you're fabricating and just need to bridge tubing, a universal slip joint like the Vibrant piece is the flexible choice.
Of the 32, 17 list fitment data, spanning model years 1986 to 2023. Top makes covered include Subaru, Harley Davidson, BMW, Honda, and Mini - named vehicles include the Subaru WRX and STi, BMW M3, Honda Civic Si, Harley Davidson Tri Glide and Sportster, and Mini Cooper S.
What else you'll need
An adapter is one link in the chain. Pair it with the component it feeds: a cat-back exhaust, an axle-back system, or standalone mufflers and exhaust tips. If you're building from raw tubing, look at exhaust pipes and exhaust flanges to complete the join. Browse the full Exhaust section to see how it all fits together.
