Thrust Washers
Thrust Washers: the small parts that control crankshaft endplay
Thrust washers sit against the crankshaft thrust surface and control axial endplay - the fore-and-aft movement of the crank in the block. When you release the clutch or the torque converter loads up, that force pushes the crank forward, and it is the thrust washers that take the load and keep endplay inside spec. Worn or crushed thrust surfaces let the crank walk, hammer the seal, and eventually chew the block, so these get replaced whenever the mains are out - during a rebuild, a bearing job, or a crank swap. Fit the wrong thickness and endplay goes out of tolerance either way, which is why they are sold as matched sets for a specific engine.
What we stock
This category holds 26 thrust washer sets from two bearing specialists: King Engine Bearings (20 of the 26) and Clevite (6). Current in-stock pricing runs from $30 to $149 - that is the live range for what is on the shelf right now, not a standing offer. At the top sits the Clevite 4B11 Non-Turbo set (TW694S) at $148.83, with mid-range options like the Clevite Lexus 2997cc set (TW589S) at $70.37 and the King 2JZGE/2JZGTE 3.0L set (TW284AM) at $67.92. The King VW JR 1.6L TD set (TW2010AM) at $58.27 is a good example of the diesel coverage.
Fitment data is on 10 of the sets and spans model years 1992 to 2023. Makes named in the range include Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Honda, Lexus, Chrysler, Audi, Hyundai, Mazda, Chevrolet, BMW, Acura and Volkswagen, covering engines like the Mitsubishi 4G63, 4G64 and 4B11, the Toyota 2RZ-FE, Chevrolet V8, Chrysler 5.7L and the Lexus 2997cc.
How to choose
The choice here is not really about brand feel - both King and Clevite build to engine-specific dimensions. It is about matching the set to your exact engine and confirming whether you need standard or an oversize/undersize thickness to bring endplay back into spec on a crank that has been ground or has wear. Buy the set that lists your engine; if two brands cover it, compare price and standard-versus-oversize availability. Do not mix a random washer into a bearing job - endplay is measured with a dial indicator or feeler gauge and the set thickness is what sets it.
What else you need with it
Thrust washers almost never go in alone. Pull matching main and rod bearings at the same time, and if you are opening the engine that far, look at pistons, head gaskets and complete gasket kits so nothing gets reused that shouldn't be. Restock the oil filters for first fire-up too. Browse the full Engine Components section for the rest of the build.
